Surgical Technician Schools Offer Advanced Medical Training

Surgical Technician Schools, colleges, and universities prepare students for assisting doctors and dentists in performing surgical procedures. Surgical technician training programs can be found in community and junior colleges, vocational schools, four-year colleges and universities, and in hospitals, as well as in full-fledged medical colleges. Surgical technician training will vary accordingly, but training programs will take nine months to two years. Surgical technician education will allow for obtaining certificates, diplomas, or associate degrees. Students will need to have some background and interest in health, biology, chemistry, and mathematics to enter into surgical technician training programs.

Surgical technician programs of study will include classroom and supervised clinical experience. Students will begin their training as surgical technicians with courses in anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology and medical terminology. Studies will include sterilization of instruments, infection prevention and control, care and safety of patients, professional ethics, surgical procedures, techniques, and equipment for completion of the certificate, diploma, or degree.

Surgical Technician Schools offer Continuing education and reexamination that may be required every 4 years to maintain certification. Most surgical technologists work 40-hour weeks, and may be on call for emergency weekend, holiday, or night work. Working environments for surgical technicians is clean, well-lighted, and cool, however, standing for long periods of time and remaining alert during operations is required in the profession.

Salaries for surgical technicians begin around $34,000, though this can vary according to types of surgery. Dental and physicians' offices surgical assistants may earn slightly more than those in general medical and surgical hospitals.
